I could rehash Donna Summer’s life or I could tell you how she affected my life. Growing up with a father who partied through the 70s, I was no stranger to disco music. I heard Love to Love You Baby, Hot Stuff , Bad Girls and any other song which may have resided on my dad’s trusty old black cassette for long car journeys. I did not sit up and take notice until I saw an old video of Donna Summer, gorgeous, sparkly dressed, singing I Feel Love and looking like she felt the love! I got goose bumps and wanted to dance! Fantastic.
Brain Eno told David Bowie:
I have heard the sound of the future.’ … ‘I Feel Love’, by Donna Summer … ‘This is it, look no further. This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years.
He got it SO right, except that it lasted more than 15 years. I have been no stranger to the dance scene, large clubs, small clubs and super clubs. Every time the crowds hear the opening bars of that record the place goes wild, people cheer and dance.
And that’s it – that’s her legacy to me – she created a song that is so timeless not matter what the era, no matter what the scene – people want to dance. What a legacy!
Rest in Peace – Donna Summer!
